Gwynn Bassan

Gwynn Bassan

Education Adviser

Gwynn joined the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education (SDBE) in September 2023 as an Education Adviser, leading National Professional Qualification (NPQ) programmes across the diocese and advising schools in seven London boroughs. A Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching, he is committed to excellent pedagogy and high-quality professional development.

Previously, Gwynn was Director of Education for a large, high-performing Multi-Academy Trust, where he led work on quality assurance, teaching and learning, and professional development. He also developed networks for senior and curriculum leaders across primary and secondary schools, and designed a research-informed professional growth and appraisal model.

With more than 20 years of senior leadership experience, Gwynn has served as Headteacher, Executive Headteacher, Principal of an outstanding grammar school, and Executive Principal across schools in Medway and Portsmouth. His experience spans a wide range of educational settings across Wales, London and the south of England.

Gwynn is widely recognised for his impact on school improvement, including leading schools out of special measures as an interim headteacher. At The Rochester Grammar School, he helped establish its reputation as a nationally and internationally recognised Thinking School. He also served on the steering group, led by the late Professor Bob Burden and David Hyerle, that worked with the University of Exeter to embed a metacognitive approach across Trust schools and contributed to the Thinking Schools field guide.

He founded and led the New Horizons Teaching School Alliance, bringing together 40 schools and building strong professional learning networks. His work has supported teacher development from initial training to senior leadership, and he has contributed to national thinking on leadership through his involvement with IOE/UCL.

Proud of his Punjabi and Welsh heritage, Gwynn draws on formative experiences of church, music and inspiring teachers to shape his values. A former pupil of St Margaret’s Primary School in Plumstead, where his mother was a nursery teacher, he now supports Church schools across London and leads work on emerging priorities, including AI in education. Gwynn is also a Trustee for Culham St Gabriel’s and a member of the Sutton People’s Committee, where he represents the Bishop and Trustees of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark.
