Shaun Burns

Primary Religious Education Adviser, Worship and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development Adviser

Shaun joined the team in 2012, the year that the Olympics came to London, which makes him the longest continuous serving member of the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education (SDBE) staff team!

He joined as Primary Religious Education (RE) Adviser, but since then his role has broadened out to include Worship and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development.

He is truly a ‘Southwark boy,’ having lived and worshipped all his life in The Diocese of Southwark, having been educated as a pupil in one of our Church of England schools and, prior to working at the SDBE, having taught in another of our C of E schools for many years. There he was RE Subject Leader along with many other complimentary roles and also carried out RE Outreach Work with Lewisham Local Authority (LA) along with working alongside many different organisations in the field of RE.

Shaun is a Post-Threshold qualified teacher with a specialism in Religious Education, has Chartered London Teacher status and is an inspector for the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS). He is an RE Quality Mark Assessor and a Global Neighbours Assessor. He is also the accredited diocesan trainer for ‘Understanding Christianity.’

Shaun’s main role is to advise and support schools within our diocese on Religious Education, Collective Worship and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development, all within the context of contributing to a school’s distinctiveness and effectiveness as a Church of England school. This work is particularly with RE Subject Leaders, Collective Worship Leaders, Head Teachers, Governors and Incumbents, but all staff and clergy really!

He advises schools on their Christian distinctiveness and all matters SIAMS and is the Diocesan SIAMS Lead.

He is the producer and presenter of regular gatherings for our family of diocesan Church of England schools such as The Bishop of Southwark’s Lent Call Thanksgiving Service and our annual Diocesan Primary Schools Leavers’ Services.

He works closely with many professional local and national networks, including LAs through their Standing Advisory Councils on Religious Education (SACREs) and is responsible for co-ordinating and supporting the Church of England representatives on SACREs across The Diocese of Southwark, also serving on a number of the SACREs himself.

He represents the SDBE on the Children and Young People’s Advisory Group and The Bishop’s Advisory Group on Liturgy.

He develops and maintains strong links between the SDBE and the cathedral, not least with the Cathedral Learning Centre.

He is also the lead for the SDBE’s environmental work and represents the SDBE on the diocesan groups: - the Environment Working Group, the Carbon Net Zero Steering Group and the Eco Diocese Working Group.
